Who can use the morning after pill?
The morning after pill is available online to women strictly above 18 years of age, usually to order in preparation for a future potential contraceptive emergency. However, if you need help urgently, you will need to visit your GP or a GUM clinic as soon as possible. Levonelle medicine is widely available to purchase over-the-counter for girls aged 16 years and above.
How does it work?
The morning after pills work by delaying or stopping ovulation. Sperm can survive for a maximum of 120 hours (5 days) in the female body after engaging in sex. If ovulation does not happen within this time frame, fertilization will not occur. The lining of the womb may also get affected by the medicine. This will decrease the chances of implantation even further.
Will it prevent contracting STIs?
NO. Only contraceptives which contain a physical barrier (condoms) help prevent against STIs.
Which morning-after pills are available in the UK?
There are currently two different types of pills available: Levonelle and EllaOne.
