Q & A

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a very common health condition. It occurs when the acid from the stomach moves up to the oesophagus. This happens when the muscular band at the top of the stomach becomes weak. It allows the acid to travel into the food pipe causing heartburn which results in GORD. Medicines can help prevent the reflux disease. Basic symptoms noted are heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, etc.

Ranitidine tablet is H2-receptor antagonist medicine. It treats conditions caused by excessive acid being produced in the stomach. Ranitidine protects the lining of the stomach from the acid formation. This prevents heartburn, ulcer, and also heals the already damaged areas. It is available as tablets, effervescent tablets, and oral liquid. Ranitidine is also known as Zantac.

How long does indigestion last?

The symptoms which come with indigestion will typically last around 3-4 days but sometimes up to a couple days longer. They can range anywhere from mild to severe and have the potential to seriously disrupt everyday routines.

What foods typically cause indigestion?

How you eat and the foods that you eat can play a significant role in causing indigestion. Certain foods which will trigger indigestion will vary from person to person; the most common types would be acidic, fatty, greasy, or spicy foods.

What methods can I take from home to prevent indigestion from recurring?

You should first determine what foods are causing a negative reaction with you and completely avoid them. If you are a smoker or a drinker, you should try and cut back on your habit as much as possible. Try seeking help on these matters and this could, in turn, benefit your indigestion related troubles. You could also try eating 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals.

I suffer from heartburn every night; should I continue taking medication or visit a doctor?

Occasional heartburn is very common and typically not serious. However, if you suffer from heartburn near enough every night or quite frequently, it could be a sign of a more serious underlying problem, such as esophagitis. If you are finding yourself taking more than twice-weekly OTC drugs for heartburn, you should definitely consult your doctor immediately.
