Q & A

Obesity leads to various health concerns. The main cause is mostly excessive food intake and no physical activity. Body Mass Index (BMI) determines overweight and obesity in adults. You can also calculate and know if you are at the border-line. Your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters gives the BMI score. BMI greater than or equal to 25 results in overweight; whereas BMI greater than or equal to 30 is a sign of obesity. Hence, start the precautionary measures.

Xenical is a medicine that treats obesity. It restricts the way fat is digested and absorbed by the body. There are enzymes in the digestive juices of our stomach and small intestine. They normally break down the fat (present in our food), which can now easily be absorbed into our bloodstream. Xenical prevents the enzymes from doing this action. This reduces the digestion of the fat. Hence, it comes out of the body without being absorbed. This helps weight loss. However, it is recommended to eat low-fat food, as this medicine works on about one-third of the fat that we consume. Xenical is also known as Beacita, Alli, and Orlistat.

Why should I try and achieve a healthy weight?

There is an abundance of health benefits to be had from sustaining a healthy weight. You will generally have a longer life expectancy and will be at a decreased risk of developing any chronic diseases in the future. Losing even a small amount of weight can provide you with instant benefits such as heightened self-esteem, feeling more energetic, being more mobile, etc.

Is there a quick way I can lose weight?

In short, no. Don’t listen to adverts or products that claim to be able to provide rapid weight loss. Although weight may appear to disappear quicker than if you were to diet, it won’t last. The best way to lose weight is to set out a realistic plan with goals that are actually achievable, to avoid you getting discouraged. You should eat healthy food and drinks and undergo frequent physical activity.

Will I require prescription medication?

Not necessarily. You can lose weight by using the conventional method of undergoing frequent exercise and eating a healthy diet. Prescription medication will typically be used as part of a monitored program.

How do I know if I’m classed as overweight or obese?

You can find out this by first finding out your body mass index (BMI). If you have a BMI of between 25-30 you are regarded as overweight, if it’s between 30-40 you are obese, and if you are 40+ you are morbidly obese.
